Our Story
We started Citizens on Patrol with a simple goal in mind: to create a Neighborhood Watch that affords the Citizens of Philadelphia the opportunity to be the eyes and ears of law enforcement, and keep our communities safe, while getting paid to do it! Our nation is built on the strength of our citizens. Not only does neighborhood watch allow citizens to help in the fight against crime, it is also an opportunity for communities to bond through service. The Neighborhood Watch Program draws upon the compassion of average citizens, asking them to lend their neighbors a hand. The Citizens on Patrol Neighborhood Watch is the portal to assist law enforcement agencies and our communities, to provide technical assistance, resource documents, watch stories, networking, and assistance to the field.
Citizens on Patrol is working to unite law enforcement agencies, private organizations, and individual citizens in a citywide effort to reduce crime and improve local communities. The success of the program crime prevention efforts can be accomplished by community and law enforcement engagement through our mobilization program. Visible signs of the program are seen throughout North and West Philadelphia on street signs, window decals, and at community block parties and service projects. We've created a platform that makes it easy for people to connect with others who share their interests and passions. Our journey has been a long and winding one, but we're proud of what we've accomplished so far. Every day, we encounter situations calling upon us to ensure that the streets of Philadelphia are safe!
How it Started
Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and best- known crime prevention concepts in North America. In the late 1960s, an increase in crime heightened the need for a crime prevention initiative focused on residential areas and involving local citizens. The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) responded, creating the National Neighborhood Watch Program in 1972, to assist citizens and law enforcement. In an effort to prevent the violence in Philadelphia, strengthening and securing communities has become more critical than ever. Citizens on Patrol Neighborhood Watch has responded to the challenge, expanding beyond a traditional crime prevention role to help neighborhoods focus on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and terrorism awareness.
